Introduction

At the beginning of the 21st century, the world’s population decreased drastically due to the spread of viruses caused by global bioterrorism. This caused political and economic disorder and destroyed social infrastructure.
A few years later, it becomes clear that some who were infected had recovered miraculously.
They had transformed into beings that had much better immune and metabolic systems than the ordinary humans.
They maintained young and healthy bodies for considerable periods of time, however, they were vulnerable to ultraviolet light and could not operate in sunlight. They insisted that such transformation was proof that they represent a transitional phase of evolution and they began to call themselves ‘the Nox’ (homo Noxensis: the ones who live in the night).
Once the way to transform into a Nox was discovered, the number started growing and they became the target of general disapproval. However, more and more young people decided to become nocturnal, in part because the ability to transform into a Nox can be lost around the age of thirty. Gradually, the Nox began to rule the political and economic centre, and the population ratio was eventually reversed.
Forty years after the emergence of the Nox, the number of ordinary humans has been reduced to around 30%, and in those islands which used to be called Japan, the Nox formed self-ruled independent communities in a peaceful alliance.
While the Nox mainly lived in big cities, ordinary humans were allocated to the island of Shikoku although some stayed in their hometowns and still lived in small villages.
One particular village, in Nagano – Ward 8, once saw the murder of a Nox and was condemned to suffer an economic blockade by the neighbouring Nox communities. There are just over 20 villagers remaining.
Now, as the ten years of social ostracism and sanction are coming to an end, the villagers start communicating with the Nox once more…
